News and Media Relations elevates Penn State’s top-tier media profile through proactive media and science writing, develops high-level internal communications, maintains Penn State’s social media presence, and manages issues communications.
Proactive Media and Science Writing //
We are responsible for driving high-profile media placements by identifying current trends and topical issues that could elevate the reputation of the University through visible engagement.This includes translating complex research and science into easily digestible news stories that highlight the University’s commitment to research.
Our team effectively handles all components of media strategy through clear and consistent written, spoken, and visual communications, including results monitoring, reporting, and analysis. We are responsible for building and maintaining relationships with influential journalists, promoting public awareness of Penn State’s top-tier quality to the state, nation, and world.
Internal Communications //
We work to enhance the University’s reputation with our greatest ambassadors—students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members. We build a well-informed community across the Commonwealth by communicating Penn State’s impact in Pennsylvania and beyond, advancing the University’s strategic priorities and core brand messages, providing critical information for the University community, and celebrating Penn Staters’ successes.
In support of those goals, our team plays a key role in strategic direction and oversight of the University’s news platforms, which reach millions of internal and external stakeholders annually. This includes Penn State Today, the University’s flagship email news publication, sent daily to about 130,000 students, faculty, and staff at all Penn State locations and the World Campus.

Penn State’s Social Media Office supports and communicates University priorities, research discoveries, and initiatives. The common threads throughout all of our social media platforms are educating our audiences about what Penn State has to offer and celebrating Penn State’s people and successes. We manage Penn State’s official social media accounts: Penn State Facebook, Penn State Twitter, The Nittany Lion Twitter, PSUResearch Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, LinkedIn, and Tumblr.
As part of leading social media efforts, we work with communicators across all campuses, colleges, and units, as well as with faculty, staff, and student organizations on social media best practices, University-wide initiatives, and presidential priorities.
Issues Management //
As a critical part of advancing Penn State’s brand and reputation, we serve the University by offering guidance in navigating potential and emerging issues that may have important consequences for its community. Trained in anticipating and identifying potential challenges, as well as monitoring and assessing trends, our team develops strategies to communicate verified facts, as well as key messages, quickly and accurately to internal and external audiences.
